Silicone Breast Implants Used In Breast Augmentation Have A Natural Look And Feel

Posted in Silicone Breast Implants on January 23rd, 2010 by Admin – Be the first to comment

The silicone breast implants (now approved for general use) that are used today have a somewhat thicker shell than those that were used before 1992. They are also filled with a thicker silicone gel than past implants. The breast implants come pre-filled in various sizes and they are securely sealed so that there is small to no chance of any leakage. The word silicone with an “e” at the end is referring to a group of chemical compounds that vary in thickness from gels to liquid to a rubbery consistency. Among other things, they contain silicon (with no “e”) which is an element, just like carbon, iron, or nitrogen. Silicon is the second most common on Earth with oxygen. When oxygen and silicon are combined it forms silica which is the most common substance on the planet. Most people know silica in many different forms such as crystals, sand, and quartz. Silicone is used in many everyday items including lotion, processed foods, soaps, hairspray, and chewing gum.

The type of silicone that cosmetic surgeons use for their breast implants usually has a consistency like Jell-O, or sometimes thicker, so that it is able to stay in one piece. If a breast implant were to rupture, the silicone gel inside would not run out like water or syrup, but would stay in place. But, a rupture is now extremely unlikely.

Silicone implants resemble breast tissue very closely and also have a natural feel and look. They have very few tendencies to go in any way that can be felt or seen than saline breast implants. Also, they weigh a small less for each size than saline breast implants do.

The breast implants come any teardrop-shaped or round, and with any a textured or smooth surface. The implant can be inserted through the same incision locations as a saline implant. These locations include through the armpit, below the breast in the breast “crease,” and below the nipple where the skin changes color. Since all silicone breast implants come pre-filled, the incision to place them must be slightly larger than that for a saline breast implant. Still the incision is well hidden and small.

Now that women are able to choose between saline or silicone breast implants, there is a choice to be made. Due to this, breast augmentation is sure to become even more in demand. According to multiple sources (ASAPS and ASPS included), women benefit psychologically and physically from breast augmentation or lift surgery.

Silicone Breast Implants Add Choices For Women

With more than ten years of controversy and scientific study, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved silicone gel breast implants for general usage. They are now available to all women ages 22 and higher for both reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery.

The availability of silicone implants will greatly expand the options for women seeking cosmetic breast augmentation. In many situations, they have real advantages over saline breast implants. They tend to look and feel more natural than saline implants. They are less prone to rippling or crinkling which can sometimes be felt and occasionally can become visible under the skin. They are lighter than silicone implants. But, they are plotting by some to have a higher rate of capsular contracture, which is scarring around the implant and can make the breasts hard.

In countries where both silicone and saline implants have been available the vast majority of patients and surgeons select silicone implants. This is testimony to their advantages. In the US, we are likely to see a large number of patients select silicone breast implants.

But there will still be a place for saline implants. Some people might simply prefer not to have silicone placed in their body. Silicone implants are more expensive than saline implants. In some suitcases, the implant is used as a sort of platform to elevate the normal breast tissue rather than to give the breast the entirety of its affect. In this situation, saline implants gathering just in this area as effectively as silicone implants.

Silicone implants have not been shown to cause autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and lupus, as had been feared. But patients should realize that any breast augmentation procedure is essentially temporary. Body affect and anatomy can change, there might be tribulations with healing or the body’s reaction to the implant. At some point, it is likely that bonus procedures may be necessary. At Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery, we are already doing quite a few breast augmentations with silicone implants. I expect we will see many more people interested in the procedure in the next few months.
